Bergen, Oslo and Paris

Bergen, Oslo and Paris

via Air France New La Première

For my birthday dinner, I picked to go to one of my favorite Mexican restaurants.
Oui, Mexican in Paris. Anahuacalli in the 5th has the best and strongest margaritas I've ever tasted.
And their Chili Rellenos are amazing and legendary.

Uber got us there just after 8PM. Yep, just like always.

And the margaritas? As good as ever.

But, but, but... there's no Chili Rellenos on the menu. Huh? I asked our waiter who said that they changed the menu and no longer serve it.
Seriously?? The best thing on your menu and you dump it??

So, Mrs. SFO opted for the chicken enchilada which was very good.

Reluctantly, I tried the replacement chili. Uh, not even close.

What a disappointment. Told the owner who said "so sorry, but we could have made them for you". Say what?? Perhaps you should tell your waitstaff, or keep it on the menu. Arrgh. Margaritas were still great but I think we've closed the chapter on this relationship.

Anyway, back to hotel. And no need to flag down a taxi or find a taxi stand with Uber. Uber black showed up less than a minute after I ordered it.   Meanwhile back at the hotel, we head up to our rooftop terrace for champagne and birthday cake.

And the view.

Pretty cool view from our bed.

After a leisurely morning, we headed downstairs for a late breakfast, which was included in our Virtuoso rate. More bizarre service issues this morning as, despite wide open seating, the hostess sat 2 other people right beside us. Breakfast was mediocre, so much so that we didn't even bother the next morning.

Unknown and weird tasting amuse-bouche.

Mrs. SFO's omelet.

My Eggs Benedict. Meh.

After breakfast, we headed out to take care of Mrs. SFO's Paris shopping list hitting some of her Paris faves, including Loro Piana, Causse, Alexandre de Paris and Galleries Lafayette. Outside the hotel, we waited for our Uber Black to arrive, slowed down by grandma strolling down the middle of the street with bébé. LOL.

First stop, Rue du Faubourg St-Honoré.

And Loro Piana.

LOL, sure let's spend $3,000 on a kid's outfit.

Place Vendome. Still waiting for the Ritz and now the obelisk is being renovated.

After Galleries Lafayette, Mrs. SFO suggested the HOHO, which is a great way to see any city, especially Paris.

Selfies apparently override safety.

We got off HOHO at the Grand Palais.

And walked towards an even scarier shopping street for men, rue Montaigne.

Just as the rain started again. So we stopped for a drink and snack at the terrace
of the wonderful Plaza Athenée. We seemed to be the only ones that wanted to be out in the rain.

Splitting a delicious Croque Monsieur.

With a second wind, we head for Armani.

And then mercifully back to our hotel.

For about 30 minutes before heading out to one of our Paris faves, L'Atelier Joel Robuchon. Joining the line for the 6:30P reservation.

We decided to go for a regular table tonight instead of the typical bar seating.

Great meal as always although service was less than polished tonight.

LA LANGOUSTINE

LE GYOSA
à la plancha, farcie de volaille, dans son bouillon au parfum d'Asie

LE FOIE GRAS
de canard chaud, rhubarbe rose pochée dans un jus acidulé à l’hibiscus.

Sensational.

We both went beef for our main, Mrs. SFO with the rib-eye.

And my filet.

Perfectly prepared.

And amazing desserts as always.

Back at the hotel, some pretty amazing views of the Eiffel Tower featuring a light and music show.

With nothing on the agenda today and a 4PM checkout, we spent a lazy Saturday morning at the hotel and then Uber'd our way to the 9th to continue our quest for the best Croque Monsieur in Paris.  Based on a recommendation from Le Figaro, we're off to the Montmartre and Buvette, the Paris clone of New York chef Jody Williams. Wonderful neighborhood and a fabulous little resto.

We both ordered the Croque Monsieur.

OMG, the best ever!!

And the fabulous tarte tatin to finish.

Stuffed from lunch, we headed out for a leisurely walk thru the quiet streets of the Montmartre.

And some lovely neighborhoods.

Finally down towards Boul. Haussmann and Les Galleries Lafayette.

Where we took a taxi back to the hotel to pack up and head out to CDG and our long anticipated La Première experience.

Our Uber Black driver Alain dropped us off at the porte 14 La Premiére entrance of Terminal 2E.

A La Première porter greeted us and escorted us and our bags to the La Première check-in area.

Where our Personal Assistant welcomed us and processed our docs and check-in while we sat in a comfortable lounge area.

And then escorted us to security and a VIP/La Première lane where we were the only passengers.

To the wonderful La Première Lounge just inside the secure area and above dozens of high end shops.

Attractive dining area.

With a serve yourself food selection that varies according to the time of day.

But the most impressive food option is the fabulous Alain Ducasse a la carte Menu. It was all we could do to not stuff ourselves in the lounge.

The coolest part of the lounge is the bar, which is a smaller replica of the old red Plaza Athenée bar.

Wine selections under lock, presumably for the asking.

Cool theatre with giant screen TV.

And the bath, shower and spa area.

At around T-40, our Personal Assistant came and escorted down to the limo area for the short BMW ride to our gate.

Where she handed us off and introduced us to our cabin crew for the evening. And our first time in the new La Première. Simply stunning.

Pre-departure beverages including a lovely Bollinger.

And a nut and dried fruit mix in an elegant serving dish.

Excellent IFE system although nowhere near the selections of EK or SQ.

Nice amenity kit.

With high quality, usable creams.

After takeoff, the first thing was to close off the First cabin from the rest of the plane.

Today's menu featuring Michelin three star chef Anne-Sophie Pic.

And the guy responsible for the fabulous china, table and glassware.

And the wine list.

Although a little strange that the only white was a Viognier.

Today's caviar amuse-bouche.

Wow, talk about a table.

And showtime, La Première style.

We both started with the wonderful Foie gras terrine with lime zest, balsamic cream sauce and melon chutney. Oops, took a bite before I remember the pic.

Refreshing mixed green salad with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Delicious tomato and mozzarella starter.

And for the main, wow talk about presentation! Mrs. SFO chose the Beef and Foie Gras ravioli which she loved.

And my main...

The wonderful Orléans chicken with medjool date chutney and truffle.

OMG, how can we say no to French cheese...

And the most amazing dessert selections from Lenôtre in Paris.

What a decision. I went with the Baba au Rhum, one of the best I've ever tasted.

Still sunset as we chase the sun west.

After another movie, to the lav to change.

While our FA Audrey prepared our beds, Mrs. SFO in 1A.

And me in 1K.

OMG, more sweets. The amazing chocolates on both of our pillows.

We both slept for a couple of hours and then returned to our middle suite. Very cool and private with the curtains drawn. One of most brilliant ideas in suite privacy.

About an hour out, more food.

And another dessert.

We arrived at JFK T1 a few minutes early and bid adieu to a most excellent cabin crew, but especially the wonderful Audrey. But that was not the end of the great La Première service. We were met by an AF JFK rep who escorted all the way to and out of customs, making sure we found our way to the AirTrain.

What can I say? One of the most amazing First Class experiences ever. And that's saying a lot since we've flown almost every airline. La Première is an outstanding product that moves Air France to the top echelons of five star First Class carriers. Move over Lufthansa, Air France has passed you. Indeed, based on this flight, Air France may indeed have the best overall First Class product in the world.
