Off to London and Manchester

This morning I’m off to London for great food and to then Manchester for another classic Premier League match. Looking forward to my first visit to Old Trafford, and Manchester United vs. Arsenal. Today it’s United to Dulles and then Air France La Première starting with the Dulles La Première Lounge.

Pleasantly quiet early this morning at CLEAR+ PreCheck.

Into the DIA abyss.

Over to the B concourse for my United flight to Dulles.

Gate agent announced extra security this morning as a bunch of TSA agents checked our IDs.  Yeah, just in case we didn't show ID as security.  LOL.

Comfy looking bird this morning.

Very nice seatback IFE system, unlike AA.

My tomato and kale egg pie (aka quiche) was very tasty.

Air France La Première is simply amazing as a La Première personal assistant met me at my arriving United gate...

... and escorted me to the Air France La Première Lounge.

In the A concourse.

The main Business Class Lounge.

And the exclusive La Première Lounge where I was the only guest for more than 3 hours.

Bien sur!

Lunch time in the La Première Lounge.

Caesar salad to start.

Fabulous mushroom risotto with truffle oil.

And yummy tenderloin.

Dessert selection.

And cheese plate.

Air France La Première Washington to Paris

After a pleasant few hours in the La Première Lounge, my La Première Personal Assistant came to retrive me and escort me across the concourse to tonight’s 77W to Paris. Excellent service and food on board before I managed to get nearly 4 hours of sleep on our short 7 hour flight. Another marvelous Air France La Première flight.

So nice to be back in the beautiful La Première cabin.  My Suite 1A.

My predeparture champagne water as Air France really disappoints by being so cheap so to not want to pay Virginia sales tax on alcohol on the ground.

Tonight's menu...

And wine list.  Typically and embarrassingly mediocre after the champagne.

Once in the air, the good stuff.

Showtime La Première style.

I decided to sample some of the other wines on the menu.  This Viognier was dreadful and undrinkable.  Back to the Rare.

The Carrot and Ginger soup was tasty.

Trying an otherwise respectable Bordeaux but sadly also undrinkable when just popped and poured without time to breathe.

The Sea Bass with miso sauce was outstanding.

With 5.5 hours to go to Paris, I was fortunate to get nearly 4 hours of sleep.

On arrival at Paris, my personal La Première assistant met me at the door of the plane and escorted me downstairs to my private Porsche to the La Première Lounge.

One last look...

A few minutes later, the best First Class Lounge in the world.

Say what??

With 75 minutes to enjoy the lounge, my first stop was a much needed shower.

Quiet room.

Time for breakfast Chez Alain Ducasse.

The wine is still embarrassingly weak for the French flag carrier.

But the Veuve Rosé is quite acceptable and lovely.

Fresh warm baguette.

And my go to dish any time of the day, Alain Ducasse Coquillettes Jambon/Truffe Noir aka Truffle Mac N Cheese.

At T-30, my personal assistant escorted my downstairs to our Porsche to my connecting flight gate.

A220

Today's beautiful new A220.

Since boarding had already started, the jet bridge was full of passengers.  No problem at all, as my personal assistant excused us all the way to the front of the queue and the door of the plane.  LOL

Air France A220 offers the best of a generally miserable collection of European "fake" Business Class.  Economy seats with an open middle.  With the A220 2-3 seat configuration, the A side gets both seats.  Quite acceptable for the short flight .

I passed on breakfast but was able to snap a pic when 2DF both went to the loo.  Huh??

The French coast...

And a few minutes later, the English coast...

With an unusual approach and landing from the west, some cool pics...

Windsor Castle.

Welcome to London and Terminal 4.  And a great time to arrive as there was no line at immigration and the e-gates worked perfectly this morning.

Michelin Foodie Day in London

After an hour drive from Heathrow, I arrived at the Hyatt Regency London - Churchill just before noon.  Portman Square from my room.

Then off to the start of a decadent 10 hours of Michelin dining in London!

Starting with Chef Tomos Parry’s Michelin star BRAT, with open fire cooking with a Basque theme. Great open kitchen in a casual friendly atmosphere in a cool wood paneled 1st floor location in Shoreditch.

Puntarelle and Crab.  A bit of a meh.

But much better after that.  Insane Grilled Bread with Anchovies.

Langoustines.

Wonderful Lamb Ribs.

The Wood Roasted Duck was a wow!

Trying to walk off lunch.

And what would London be without a protest of some kind.

Pit stop at Kaffeine.

Then over to Marylebone for one of our favourite Indian restaurants, Michelin star Trishna.

Indian maragarita.

The Early Evening Menu...

Duck Chutney Seekh.  Always a favourite.

Hariyali Bream.  Yummy.

OMG, Tandoori Lamb Chop.

And Fig and Cardamom Kheer to finish.

Back to the Hyatt to rest up before dinner. LOL.

Dinner at FROG by Adam Handling

After a nap, it was over to Covent Garden for dinner at Michelin star FROG by Adam Handling.

Tonight's menu.

With wine pairing.

Lots of starter snacks.

And a lovely Taittinger to start.

A British wine??  With French grapes of course.  Was surprisingly good.

Fabulous Bread and Butter Chicken.

Sea Bream, Black Radish

Cod, fennel, green chili.

Quail part 1: Liver ravioli, bone tea, wild garlic.

Truffles anyone?  LOL

Quail part 2: Breast, thigh, leg and red pepper, asparagus.

Rhubarb and asparagus to complete a wonderful meal.

Avanti West Coast First Class to Manchester

What a difference a year makes on Avanti West Coast, the only train service between London and Manchester. After a very pleasant trip last year, my Avanti trip this year was simply awful. Industrial action (aka strikes) have disrupted Sunday schedules. We arrived at Euston 45 minutes prior to our scheduled 9:16am departure only to find out that our train was cancelled. Avanti West IT is so antiquated that the ticketing office couldn’t move us to the 10:16am train and had no way to see a seat map nor tell how many First Class passengers were booked on the train. So it was a mad dash to grab open seats with stragglers having to stand or at best, sit on the luggage racks. LOL. And since this was still a “breakfast train” no alcohol or even soda was served. What a mess.

Passing time in the "First Class" Lounge.

We were fortunate to make friends with the front desk agent who alerted us when the platform was announced so we could be one of the first to board and squat in an unassigned First Class seat.

Pics from last year when this trip was a pleasure.  Only 2 other pax in First on a very relaxing and pleasant trip.

With open bar...

... and a delicious lunch.

Fast forward to this year and it was standing room only in First, with these two passengers having to sit on the baggage rack.

Welcome to First Class. LOL

Anything you want as long as it's not Alcoholic or fizzy.  Basically hot drinks or juice.  Because it's before noon.  LOL.

My veggie shakshuka was apparently the best of a bad lot as my buddy had scrambled eggs which looked sus and wound up giving him food poisoning.

Welcome to Manchester.

A 10 minute taxi ride later, the Hyatt Regency Manchester.

The Arsenal team buses waiting to take the team to Old Trafford.

Old Trafford for Manchester United vs. Arsenal

What a treat for my first visit to Old Trafford and for a classic ManUnited-Arsenal game. After seeing new Spurs and Etihad stadium, it was great to be in a classic old stadium. Passionate fans hoping for a turnaround after a dismal season. Despite a slow start, United came on strong in the 2nd half and had numerous chances to pull out a victory. Our Treble Suite package included a very nice meal and excellent wines and great place to relax before and after the match.

Our home for the next 4 hours.  :)

Very nice champagne and wines.

Today's menu...

And wine list...

Yummy amuse-bouche.

A number of interesting guests including former United stars.

Someone is thrilled to be here. LOL

Delicious Caesar Tartlet, Crispy Anchovies, Confit Chicken with Parmesan Crisp and Quail Egg.

Spiced Cod Loin, Tandoori Potatoes, Curry Broth, Crispy Onion Bhaji.

£20 but no winner at this table.

And decadent Sticky Toffee Pudding to finish a really wonderful meal.

Large and noisy protest just below us.   Apparently the Glazers are not very popular here.

Time to head out to our seats.

United takes  1-0 lead at Half Time.   Back to the Treble Suite for the intermission.

Back for the 2nd half.

After Arsenal tied the match, lots of action at our end in the 2nd with numerous United chances to win.

Oh so close as the Arsenal goal keeper thwarted United's go ahead goal in the last minutes.

Back the Treble Suite to relax while the crowds leave.

Delicious meat pies are a post game snack.

And post game commentary.

What a very special day at Old Trafford.

Air France La Première to San Francisco

After a great match day in Manchester, it was time to head home to Denver… the long way of course. And another wonderful day with Air France La Première. The only bad part of the trip was the 6am departure and having to endure Manchester Airport Terminal 2… a mile long post security walk to the A concourse, with jet bridges 4 flights of stairs down from the gate and concourse. But once on board, Air France Euro Business Class was excellent on a new A220. And exceptional La Première ground service in Paris, limo to the La Première Lounge and another round of Alain Ducasse Coquillettes Truffe/Noir aka Truffle Mac n Cheese.

The throng at 4:20am.

Sadly not a hint of La Première service at this outstation... where almost everyone is Priority.

A mile walk later...

Ridiculous airport design with jet bridges 4 flights of stairs down from the gate and concourse.

Back in my 2A seat.

Gorgeous sunrise.

As we arrived, our La Première service kicked in as we were met at the door by our wonderful La Première personal assistant.

Tarmac photo op.

And our Porsche wheels.

First stop is security as apparently the French don't trust the Brits.

A few minutes later, back home!

And Alain Ducasse coquillettes, one more time.

After breakfast, a quick tour of the new La Première suites.  As if La Première isn't expesive enough, Air France wants €800 per person for 3 hours.  Yeah, that a big no thanks here.

Air France La Première Paris to San Francisco

After our brief visit to the La Première Lounge, we were back in our Porsche limo for the drive around the airport to our agent and our 10+ hour 77W flight to San Francisco. And what a treat to be the only two passengers today on a seemingly private flight to SFO. Wonderful service on board and after a 3 hour nap, exceptional food and service. What a marvelous Air France La Première flight.

Mais oui, merci.

After take-off, bedtime was the first order of business.

4 hours later, time for lunch.  And more champagne.

Today's menu.  Lots of nice options.

And the anytime menu...

And wine.  Same as my inbound flight a few days ago.

Showtime La Première style with caviar to start.

A lovely Sauternes.

To go with my foie gras.

And the star of the show, the amazingly delicious Beaufort PDO cheese soufflé, mushroom and truffle cream.

Trying another wine.  Meh, back to the Champagne.

Lobster fricassée was wonderful.

Time for some cheese.

And yummy Tarte Tatin for complete a delightful meal.

After a movie, back to sleep for nearly 4 hours.  And a nice fresh fruit plate prior to landing after an outstanding flight.  Wonderful service and food.

An ontime arrival and Global Entry was our friend today in an othewise crowded CBP.   Leaving CBP with some Emirates friends.  LOL.

Comfy looking cabin...

... but what the heck is this?

Cool views of our old home town.

Dinner time.   Tonight trying the San Francisco Signature Dish - pan seared halibut.   PR pic looks nice...

Reality, not so much.   Was OK but completely dry from overcooking.  The fennel potato purée was loaded with butter and really tasty.

The Banana Pudding was yummy.

We landed at DEN nearly 40 minutes early but waited 20 minutes for the jet bridge operator to figure out how it worked.  LOL.   What a great trip and memorable visit to Old Trafford.  Thanks for following along.
