Swiss First Lounge
Zurich

The good news is that with a gate A62 arrival, we were the closest to the FCL and in the Lounge in less than two minutes. Pleasant welcome from the friendly staff and were walking into a nearly empty lounge.  Pics from our last visit a week ago.

Having recently had breakfast in FRA, I only tried a couple of things... the carrot and shrimp salads were both very good.

All was well and we were happily passing the time not bothering anyone, when hoards of pax started arriving for the 1PM bank of international departure... so much so that every seat in the lounge was taken and it was standing room only.

The problem is compounded by the fact that the sofa groups are so close together that you have to excuse yourself and walk over other pax legs between the table and sofas. Basically like sitting in a window seat on the plane. What an idiotic design.

Let's talk about WiFi next. Unbelievably the Swiss First Lounge has no WiFi. It relies on the ZRH airport Wifi which provides one free hour but only after you give them your cell number and they text you a one hour code. You want WiFi for a 2nd hour, you either wait 7 hours or you pay 7 CHF!! Seriously??

I went to the front desk to inquire whether I was missing something. A sheepish agent apologized and admitted they had no WiFi system, adding that she can't believe that LX management won't install their own system. Yeah, me too. Wow.

At 12:05P we excused ourselves and schlepped our carry-ons over other pax to get first to the aisle and then to the lobby for our "van to the E gates". We joined about 15 other people and waiting for the 2nd elevator to go downstairs to the van area.

Once downstairs, we queued to go thru passport control and then into various vans to be shuttled to the E gates. Not sure why since we are all offloaded at the same locaton, but there was only one other pax (also ORD) in our van. Our driver opened the luggage compartment so we could put our own bugs in the van. Getting the picture? Obviously, we're not in Frankfurt anymore Dorothy.

Some 5 minutes later we arrived at the concourse E, not at our gate mind you, but in the lower level somewhere in the middle of concourse. Driver opened the luggage compartment so we could retrieve our bags.

As we entered the building, LX agent at E escorted us to and elevator and asked what gate?
SFO777: I have no idea. Chicago.
LX Agent: Oh, Gate E22. To the left near the end of the concourse.

Five minutes and numerous gates later we were at another queue, this one for a 2nd passport control in the last 10 minutes. Beyond that was our gate. Boarding commenced another 5 minutes later.

First Class ground treatment? Compared to Lufthansa, not even close.

Seats 2D and 2G

Boarding commencing with the now familiar group hug... First, Business, HONs, SENs and *A Gold.

And a fitting end to the poor ZRH ground experience as 1L was not used and everyone boarded thru 2L. But once we turned left and were finally in the oasis of the F cabin, everything improved very quickly. We were warmly welcomed by another wonderful in flight crew. The first impression of the new First cabin... very nice.

Coats taken and hung. And yes please, a glass of Grand Siecle would be wonderful.

More friendly chit-chat. PJs presented including a set for our son, magazines offered. The LX PJs are the best airline RJs we've experienced. So much so that Mrs. SFO insisted that we take them home with us. That's first. We usually just leave them behind.

Today's pre-departure amuse bouche was a delicious warm New potatoes with Vaherin Fribourgeois cheese and dried venison sausage.

The seat itself is a big improvement over the 343 seat, but is still way too firm for my liking. On the other hand, the layout is much better... better storage, pace, lighting, IFE and controls. But I don't know about that garage work bench type facade on the front and side of the suites. Weird.

Shortly after take-off, our crew was up prepped for our decadent two hour dinner extravaganza.

The new IFE is a big improvement over the old, and with many more movie options. Way more than even the new LH (at least on the 340 and 744)

Today's menu. Great starters but some strange (IMO) mains.

The amazing starter cart

Each of the starters were taste sensations. And the Grand Siecle a great accompaniment.

The Balik salmon was amazing as always, and tomato and sheep's cheese millefeuille excellent.

Lobster salpicon with citrus jelly, passion fruit mayonnaise. Fabulous.

Salsify and Turtle purple curry cream soup was to die for.

OK, now the main. Rabbit ragout? Filet of perch-pike with perch dumpling? I don't think so. That leaves the vegetarian ravioli or the beef tenderloin. The tenderloin was excellent from LAX-ZRH. Tonight, not so much. When I ordered it, I don't recall our FA asking how I would like it prepared. It came rare. Mrs. SFO sent hers back. I like mine medium rare so I decided to have a go. It was OK, sauce was good. But the cut wasn't as tasty as LAX-ZRH. Mrs. SFO was not as kind remarking that it was a cheap cut of meat. My culinary school graduate would know.

Not sure what possessed me, but I tried a Swiss red that sounded good on paper but wasn't. More Grand Siecle SVP. The selection of Swiss artisan cheeses was outstanding, especially with Graham's 15 year Tawny.

And finally, a decadent end to the food orgy with a very pleasant Saas-Fee net cake and saffron ice cream.

As I wasn't tired, I passed most of the rest of the flight watching three more movies. I really like the LX IFE and the movie selection is great. Not SQ great but still very good. Although our FAs were a little overzealous at pushing more food on us, I only nibbled on a couple of items, as I was mostly stuffed from lunch.

On time arrival at ORD and we pulled up to our gate at around 3:50P. Another excellent LX First flight with a truly outstanding and friendly crew, most of whom stopped by to thank us for flying LX. I enjoyed the new First on the 333. IMO, certainly a lot better than the 343, but it's still not as comfortable a hard product as new LH First or the CX Suite. LX food and inflight service is a little better than LH, but the ZRH ground experience is such a mess that I really can't see choosing LX over LH if both were available. The FRA ground experience is simply amazing and so much better than ZRH that I just don't understand how LX is rated higher than LH by many FFers.

Another great Global Entry moment as at least 1,500 people were in the non-US queue that snaked two gates deep into the corridor before the C&I hall itself. Another 100 in the US lines but nary a soul at the GE kiosks.

Our bag was the 10th off the carousel and we were at the AA counter in Terminal 3 about 10 minutes later. My Pre-Check worked and I breezed thru without removing shoes/coats/liquids but Mrs. SFO did not get the green light. Probably because our PNRs were split along the way. Three hours in the pleasant H/K AC and it was time for the final leg home.

Dinner

Like an old shoe, we're back on my favorite domestic airline, airplane and seat, 6E on the old AA Mad Dog.

The usual G&T with ramekin of warm mixed nuts.

Choice of stuffed pasta shells or herb chicken in beurre blanc sauce with sweet potatoes and snap peas. Greek-ish salad and chocolate chip cheesecake. Chicken was delicious, even after 10 hours of LX First. Flawless inflight service by senior NYC-based FA David.

Early arrival in Denver and even waiting for our one checked bag, we were home just after 10PM. A great trip but Mrs. SFO has decided that 2 European trips in 3 weeks is too much. She doesn't want to even think of traveling again for a while. Meanwhile, I'm off to India in three weeks with one of our sons. Seven days in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with a day in Mumbai on our way to Colombo. Lots of great flights including more LX First ORD-ZRH-DEL and then EK First CMB-DXB-LHR and BA First LHR-LAX on the amazing CMB First fare.

Thanks for coming along on this ride and for all your kinds comments and support.
